Speed Skiing: Tidstrand & Origone take season titles
Whilst the competition season for the other FIS disciplines is already over, Speed Skiing has still been in top gear and all eyes turned to Verbier (SUI) where the finals for the world’s best Speed Skiers were held from 15th-17th April.

Under bluebird skies, Sanna Tidstrand (NOR) who has dominated the ladies’ circuit for the past three seasons, took the final victory and claimed her third consecutive overall World Cup title with a total of 500 points. By taking all six victories this season, and clinching the silver medal at the 2013 FIS Speed Skiing World Championships in Vars (FRA) she once again demonstrated her excellent form. Her closest competitors were Liss-Anne Pettersen (NOR), 365 points, and teammate Linda Baginski, 310 points, who raced to second and third place.

The season title in the men’s event went to Simone Origone from Italy who took his third overall crystal globe after 2010 and 2011 with a total of 540 points. Racing to four World Cup victories and two podiums this season, he also claimed the gold medal at the World Championships in Vars. In the overall rankings, his brother Ivan placed second while Klaus Schrottshammer of Austria took third spot with 460 and 410 points respectively.

Next to Les Arcs and Vars (both FRA), Verbier is considered one of the world’s best-known and fastest pistes for Speed Skiing. During this year’s competition, the fastest men on the steep slopes, Origone, sped to an impressive 217.01 km/h with Tidstrand reaching a maximum speed of 207.25 km/h on the ladies’ side.
