Introducing FIS World Championship Candidates – Planica

Planica is one of three candidates bidding to host the 2021 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and the sole candidate applying for the 2020 FIS Ski Flying World Championships. Its profile is featured below:

“Small countries deserve the right to organise big events,” said Planica Ambassador and Cross-Country legend Petra Majdič.

It is the third time Planica has bid for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. With even more enthusiasm and energy, it will present its bid to the extended FIS family at the FIS Congress in Cancun (MEX).

This season, Planica hosted three major events: The FIS Cross-Country World Cup, the FIS World Cup Finals in Ski Jumping and the opening of a new Nordic Centre.

In the past, many milestones were overcome in Planica. It witnessed incredible sports stories along with the development of Nordic sports. In Slovenia where Nordic Skiing is among the most popular sports, competitions were organised at the highest level.

Planica has already hosted six FIS Ski Flying World Championships and organised a large number of FIS World Cup events.

When the question arises “why Planica”, the Bid Committee replies:

  1. It has the most modern Nordic Centre in the world
  2. It takes care of the environment and plans all activities in compliance with environmental sustainability
  3. It has the people and the knowledge for organising such a big event
  4. Slovenia has a rich sports history and future. Slovenian Nordic athletes are among the best in all categories
  5. In the radius of 350 kilometers surrounding Planica, there are a potential 40,000,000 people who could visit the events on a daily basis
  6. Because “small countries deserve a chance to organise big events”
