Green Light for St. Moritz 2017

With the clock ticking towards the start of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 in St. Moritz (SUI), the Final Inspection was held on site at the Swiss resort.

Under traditional sunny skies in St. Moritz, the official technical inspections were carried out on Sunday, 25th September 2016 by the FIS Race Directors Atle Skaardal and Markus Waldner and their technical teams with the St. Moritz 2017 sport’s management, the host broadcaster Swiss television SRG-DRS and Longines data and timing service. An intensive day included a complete walk through of the men’s and ladies’ courses as well as looking into the sport organisational plans.

The technical officials came away from their meetings and venue tours on a positive note and now await the winter season.

Atle Skaardal commented: "St. Moritz is one of our traditional stops for ladies on the World Cup tour and we look forward to taking the next step with the upcoming World Championships." Markus Waldner added: "Last year was our first taste of the venue here in St. Moritz and the men’s athletes gave the venue rave reviews. We look forward to February for the races on these challenging courses.”

The technical inspections were followed on 26th and 27th September with the final Coordination Group meeting. Present were representatives from the 2017 Organising Committee, FIS, Swiss Ski, the European Broadcast Union and its commercial partner Tridem. In addition, as part of the Transfer of Knowledge programme, representatives from Are 2019 and Cortina 2021 were also present.

FIS Presdient Gian Franco Kasper, a native of St. Moritz commented, “The Organisers have done an excellent job preparing every element for the World Championship. For me, it is naturally a special two weeks as my hometown will host the world and it is particularly satisfying to see how the entire town and region are involved and supporting the Championships.”

FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis commented: "The Organisers have prepared a world class event to showcase Alpine ski racing to the world at the highest level. It is clear that after five years of hard work, their preparations are paying off and they are well prepared to welcome the world in February to St. Moritz and Switzerland for what promises to be an excellent Championships.”
