Clinic Munich - 1st Cross and Slope Course Design Workshop
Last weekend, the Audi Conference Centre in Munich (GER) hosted the first-ever FIS Cross and Slope Course Design Workshop. The goal of the seminar was to gather all the stakeholders involved with Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard competitions in one place to discuss the most important issues about course design before the 2014/15 season kicks off in December.

“It was long overdue for FIS to gather the relevant people, companies and groups together to increase the understanding of what we are doing at FIS” said Joseph Fitzgerald, the FIS Freestyle Skiing Coordinator.

Fitzgerald emphasized that it is necessary to express the goals of FIS in regards to the development and direction of Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding. Proper cooperation between National Ski Associations, Organising Committees as well as ski resorts, course designers and course builders is essential for providing top level events.

“I was very pleased with the communication and exchange of information,” said Uwe Beier, FIS Snowboard Race Director. “The knowledge and experience shared during this workshop will help in increasing the quality of the competitions, making events more attractive for the audience and at the same time safer for athletes”.

The Clinic gathered more than 60 experts from all over the world, including top specialists such as Jeff Ihaksi, Steve Petrie, Davide Cerato or the Schneestern crew, who were all responsible for building courses at the biggest Freestyle and Snowboard events, including the Sochi Olympic Winter Games.

“Now that we have more information, we can use it to make better courses, have fewer injuries and work together to realise future projects and build up our sport” said Martian Fiala, FIS Freestyle Ski Cross Race Director.
