Falun 2015 – less than one month to go
After nearly five years of preparation, less than a month now remains until the opening of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun on 18th February.

Falun is on schedule with preparations and media interest in the Championships increasing day-by-day. There is great demand for tickets and almost 16 000 people have registered as Friends of Falun 2015 on the website, says Sven von Holst, CEO of Falun 2015.

In less than a month, it’s time for the FIS World Ski Championships 2015 at Lugnet in Falun. So far, more than 126,000 tickets have been sold or booked. On the most popular days, sections of the grandstand are already sold out.

“Besides steady ticket sales, there is high demand for accommodation. Fortunately, there are various accommodation options still available for anyone wanting to visit Falun 2015,” says Sven von Holst.
Many athletes consider the World Ski Championships in the Nordic countries as important as the Olympic Games, and many nations are interested in participating in Falun 2015. Athletes from 60 different nations have been entered to compete so far. At Val di Fiemme 2013, 55 nations took part.

“In addition to the traditional nations such as Sweden, Norway and Finland, Falun will welcome athletes from Trinidad and Tobago and from the Kingdom of Tonga, among others,” notes Sven von Holst.
Continuous activity is now underway at Lugnet from early in the morning until late in the evening. Grandstands, the Festival Pavilion and other temporary infrastructure are being built. The Falun 2015 organisation has also carried out competitions in all the three FIS Nordic disciplines – Cross-Country Skiing, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined – in the last two weeks.

“The sports organisation had a very comprehensive run-through. At the arena, everything worked well. With the exception of an approximately one-kilometre stretch, all courses are ready with snow. Parts of the courses still need refinement work, and Falun will continue to make snow to improve the spectator areas along the courses. Falun will also produce some snow reserves,” explains Sven von Holst.

Many volunteers already came to work during the test events. They will be returning in even greater numbers in a month’s time. Falun 2015 has recruited a total of 1,800 volunteers. All volunteers will now participate in a thorough online training to have an overview of what the World Championships are all about, and what is expected from them in areas such as hospitality.

“Volunteers are our most important resource. Without them, there won’t be World Championships. We hope that they will be happy and proud to be part of the execution of one of the biggest winter sport events ever held in Sweden,” says Sven von Holst.
