IOC organises Injury Prevention Initiatives in Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard
FIS and IOC representatives along with medical doctors, scientists and researchers, national team staff, course builders and designers met on 18th and 19th June 2015 at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne (SUI).

The purpose of the meeting was to review the current knowledge on Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding injury risk, the reports of injury causation, necessary research in the area, and to propose practical injury prevention measures for the future.

Attending on behalf of FIS were Dr. Hubert Hörterer, Chairman of the FIS Medical Committee, Joseph Fitzgerald and Uwe Beier, FIS Race Directors for Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard, respectively.

Each group gave a series of presentations on their specific areas in the two disciplines along with the associated injury prevention activities, including the FIS Injury Surveillance System (ISS) from the Oslo Sport Trauma Institute.

From this summary, several initiatives may be developed in the areas of injury causation, injury risk factors, jumping and equivalent fall height, fatigue and snow preparation, in cooperation with the different science and research facilities.

Dr. Hubert Hörterer, who chaired the meeting together with Lars Engebretsen, IOC Head of Scientific Activities, commented: “We have heard excellent presentations from the international experts who enriched the meeting with very practical and concrete information. We will now be establishing a project plan in agreement with FIS and the IOC. The initiative will then become part of the activities of the FIS ISS Steering Committee.”
