IOC President addresses interactive session at UN on need for effective, accountable and inclusive institutions in achieving recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals

At the session, chaired by Republic of Korea President Geun-hye Park and Chile President Michelle Bachelet, President Bach said the IOC was “fully aligned with the United Nations Agenda 2030.”

“Last December we adopted our Olympic Agenda 2020, which addresses among many other reforms, including exactly goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals,” the IOC President said. “Olympic Agenda 2020 is based on three pillars: the pillar of sustainability, the pillar of credibility and the pillar of youth.

“If you want to enjoy credibility as an organisation, you have to be accountable, you need to be effective and you need to be inclusive,” he continued. “Therefore we have established a system of good governance which makes us accountable. This system of good governance comprises term and age limits, it comprises auditing to higher standards than requested by law, the full transparency of our financial flows, it comprises open and transparent rules for decision making, and it addresses a clear zero-tolerance policy with regard to any kind of corruption.”

In a historic moment for sport and the Olympic Movement, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the post-2015 Development Agenda on 25 September. Sport is included in the final outcome document as an “important enabler” of sustainable development for the goals, which were adopted by the UN Member States with a commitment to implement them by 2030.

A Permanent Observer to the United Nations, the IOC actively supported the process of the post-2015 Development Agenda. The new agenda is a comprehensive set of universal and transformative goals and targets that build on the Millennium Development Goals. UN Member States are committed to fully implementing the agenda by 2030
