Åre 2019 takes first steps
The 2019 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre (SWE) took its first official step as the inaugural Coordination Group meeting was held on 19th and 20th May 2015.

Members of the Åre Local Organising Committee, together with representatives from the Municipality of Åre and resort owner SkiStar, welcomed members of FIS and Infront, the broadcast and marketing partner of Åre 2019.

The meeting was the first major activity for Åre after being elected as the 2019 FIS Alpine World Ski Championship host on 5th June 2014 at the FIS Congress in Barcelona (SPA). First and foremost on the agenda was laying out the Vision and Mission for the World Championships.

Åre 2019 CEO, Niklas Carlsson presented the theme ‘Inspire the World to Ski’.

“Ultimately, the most important thing, not just for our community but globally as well, is that these World Championships inspire people to take up skiing. Our event should serve as a connection between the highest level of the sport, and the lifestyle of skiing for the general public.”

Åre, which most hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 2007, also will place a large focus on the legacy and the environment during the build-up to the World Championships, which are scheduled to take place from 5th-17th February 2019.

The Coordination Group discussed Åre 2019’s extensive Test Event plans for the World Championships. In addition to hosting its annual ladies’ World Cup race this season, Åre 2019 will host the FIS Junior World Ski Championships in 2017 and the Audi FIS World Cup Season Finals in 2018. To take the first steps in generating significant national interest in the World Championships, this upcoming season, Stockholm will also host a City Event on 1st March 2016.

“Are did an excellent job already in 2007 hosting the World Championships,” said FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis. “But it is clear during these meetings that the Organising Committee is looking to take things to the next level, with many ambitious plans and ideas.”
