Dawid Kubacki crowns Polish festival in Wisla

Dawid Kubacki won the first individual competition of the FIS Grand Prix 2015. One day after the clear win of the Polish team, Piotr Zyla completed the double victory in the individual competition and made it a perfect weekend for Poland. Norway's Kenneth Gangnes surprised in third.

With the great performances of the Polish athletes, the atmosphere at the Adam-Malysz-hill was amazing right from the start. Already the first competitor, 22-year-old Bartlomiej Klusek, showed a good jump on 127.5 m and was in the lead until the jump of Dawid Kubacki. Klusek then also had a strong second jump on 129 m and came in seventh. Kubacki posted jumps on 130 m and 133 m and with 274.9 points he achieved the first win of his career.

The winner said afterwards: “It's something special to win in front of the home crowd. In Hinterzarten I want to show good jumps again, I don't have special goals for the event there. I just want to show what I can, then I can be satisfied. After last season I was working very hard and that pays off now. I'm happy that I'm on the right track.”

Zyla second again

4.9 points behind the winner, Piotr Zyla came in second, just like last year, with 126.5 m and the longest jump of the day on 134 m. Kenneth Gangnes, who already showed a very good performance in the team competition, took his first podium result in the Grand Prix with 127.5 m and 130.5 m and 267.0 points. Also superstar Kamil Stoch played his part in the red-white ski jumping party and finished fifth with 261.2 points, behind Stefan Kraft (266.9 points).

Wellinger best German

Best German was Andreas Wellinger in sixth with 260.8 points, his teammate Andreas Wank came in eighth with 257.1 points under perfect weather conditions. World record holder Anders Fannemel and Roman Koudelka completed the Top 10.

Prevc fights back

Peter Prevc could do well only in one round. After a bad first jump on only 119 m, the second of last season's overall World Cup barely qualified for the final. There set a highlight with a 131 m jump and moved up to 14th, behind Richard Freitag, Maciej Kot and Japanese Kento Sakuyama. Jarkko Maeaettae in 16th, Janne Ahonen in 20th and Ville Larinto in 26th provided a good start of the season for the Finnish team. Vincent Descombes Sevoie and Gregor Deschwanden in 21st and 25th scored points for France and Switzerland. Deschwanden's teammate Luca Egloff was 29th and qualified for the final in a Grand Prix competition for the third time in his career.

Quotes:

Dawid Kubacki (POL): “After last season I started working with a new coach. I was working very hard and this pays off now. I was jumping very well today and I'm happy that I could win. I will go to Hinterzarten and I really like the hill there. It's kind of an historic place for us because there we won the first team competition with Adam Malysz."

Piotr Zyla (POL): "I expected to be on the podium today. I'm jumping on a very good level right now and so I was confident that I can achieve such a good result. My coach told me that I'm still a bit too late at the take-off. Now I can celebrate this result a bit."

Kenneth Gangnes (NOR): "I'm very happy that I could stand on the podium for the first time in the Grand Prix today. I'm very satisfied with this result and I'm also happy that it happened in Poland because the fans are always great here. Yesterday we were on the podium as well and this was an extra motivation for me. I hope that I can also compete here in Wisla in winter."

The FIS Grand Prix continues next weekend with a team and an individual competition in Hinterzarten.
