Press Conference kicks off next SGP preparation phase
A press conference with World Cup winner Eric Frenzel, district administrator Frank Vogel, mayor Mirko Ernst and Peter Riedel, president of the WSC Erzgebirge Oberwiesenthal took place in Oberwiesenthal this past Wednesday and kicks off the „hot“ preparation phase for the Summer Grand Prix 2016 opener event.

After the confirmation of the event at the FIS Congress in Cancun, the detailed schedule has been published. The world’s best Nordic Combined athletes and the Ladies’ Ski Jumping Continental Cup will stop at the Fichtelberg for three days

„We are happy that the FIS placed their trust in us one more time. Race Director Lasse Ottesen has visited Oberwiesenthal in April already and has been updated with the latest developments. Our timetable has been adapted a bit to contain three instead of four days but we are very confident that we will also conduct this shortened competition weekend on the highest possible level with our great volunteers,“ ski club president Peter Riedel says.

New name sponsor

One more novelty for the upcoming edition of the Summer Grand Prix opener weekend is the engagement of the Stadtwerke Annaberg-Buchholz Energie AG as name sponsor of the event. „The world elite of the Nordic Combined sport meets at the Fichtelberg for the Summer Grand Prix and we are happy to support this as name sponsor“, board member Jört Tottewitz says. „We like that the roller-ski course is in the middle of town, really close to the people. This reflects our philosophy very well: ‚Closeness feels good‘. We wish all winter athletes good luck for the Summer Grand Prix.“

Contingency plans in place

One thing that is still not clear is the situation regarding the modernisation of the jumping hill. The renewal of the side fences is not complete yet and also it is a possibility that the lift has to be deconstructed before the Summer Grand Prix. No problem for president Peter Riedel: „We are very much in favour of the jumping hill modernisation. If this scenario comes to be, we are prepared with contingency plans and can make the event work even with some restrictions.“ If the lift is not in place for the SGP any more, for example, extensive shuttle traffic would be provided as plan B.
