COC-M: Italians surprise in Wisla

The first competition of the Ski Jumping Continental Cup weekend in Wisla (POL) ended with a big surprise on Saturday afternoon.

Davide Bresadola of Italy took his first win in this competition series on the Adam-Malysz-hill in the home town of the Polish ski jumping icon. The 28-year-old, whose best result so far was a fourth place in Engelberg 2011, posted jumps of 129.5 m and 124 m and scored a total of 269.8 points. "I'm very happy that I could achieve my first win here in Wisla."

Close behind today's surprising winner, youngster Domen Prevc finished second with 126.5 m and 125.5 m and 268.2 points. This was the first podium result for the Slovene in the COC this summer. "I didn't expect a great result, I was just hoping for good jumps. Now I'm very happy", said Prevc.

Also the hosts could celebrate a top result. Jan Ziobro came in third with his jumps of 126.5 m and 127 m and 267.4 points. For him this was also the first Top 3 finish in this Continental Cup season. "I'm happy about the podium. My jumps were not perfect. The first one was far from what I wanted, the second one was a little better. There are still some things I have to improve."

Behind Slovenia's Rok Justin in fourth, Sebastian Colloredo and Alex Insam completed the outstanding result of the Italians in fifth and sixth. With three ski jumpers in the Top 6 it was definitely a remarkable day for the team and their Polish head coach Lukasz Kruczek, who was praised by today's winner after the competition. "He is a very good coach, I'm happy that I can work with him. We already achieve very good results, but we have to continue working."

Markus Eisenbichler, who won both competitions in Stams last weekend, was the best athlete of the German team in seventh. With Tilen Bartol in eighth a third Slovenie came in among the best today.

The best Norwegian, Halvor Egner Granerud (9th), and the best Austrian, Daniel Huber (10th), also achieved a Top 10 result, which was closely missed by the two veterans Tom Hilde (NOR) and Jakub Janda (CZE) in 11th and 12th.

Markus Eisenbichler defended his lead in the overall ranking with now 418 points. He is followed by Rok Justin (389 points) and Jan Ziobro (289 points).

The second competition in Wisla will be held on Sunday at 9:30 am CET.
