Lahti 2017 delivering a sustainable event

As the host of the next FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, Lahti 2017 is aiming to lead the way in promoting and delivering a sustainable event.

With its new partner, Finnish train company: VR, the Centenary Championships encourage visitors be environmentally friendly by travelling by train. In line with the sustainability slogan “Not for ten days but for the next 100 years”, Lahti’s aim is to create a framework that shows the way for future international sporting events. 104 trains will be operating to and from Lahti per day.

Meanwhile, presenting partner Stora Enso, a Finnish renewable materials company, will contribute to the sustainability of the event in numerous ways, including the use of paperboard cups and climate-smart wooden houses for the race organisers.

“Our sustainability work is based on several deeds from efficiency in material use, to public transportation and promoting equal rights for girls and ladies. We have an opportunity that is bigger than Finland and these World Championships to actually have an effect when other major sport events are adjusting their operating models to a more sustainable direction, explained Janne Leskinen, Secretary General of Lahti 2017.
